Dewi Persik was born as Dewi Muria Agung and nicknamed Depe. She was best known as a dangdut singer in her hometown. Dewi was born and raised in Java, Indonesia and also has some Chinese ancestry. She was once banned in performing on stage because of her vulgar performance and outfits. Dewi Persik was once again involved in a bigger controversy when her nude pictures were leaked in the world wide web. In her defense, she noted that the pictures were meant to be private. In 2011, it was reported that she had a hymen reconstruction surgery in Cairo, Egypt. Dewi was first married to first marriage was to singer Saiful Jamil but divorced few years after. She then married Aldiansyah Taher in 2008 but only spent a year in the relationship. The supreme court of Indonesia sentenced Dewi Persik for 3 months in jail after a fight with actress Julia Perez.
